About Us

Volunteers for Inter-Valley Animals (VIVA) was founded in 1981 by four friends with only $30 and a commitment to help the homeless, injured, and starving animals in the Lompoc Valley.

VIVA initiated a program of humane activities including rescues, adoptions, and spay/neuter assistance with the help of a growing legion of volunteers. Since inception, VIVA has directly helped over eight thousand animals.

We have operated an adoption center in Lompoc for the past 30 years. Right now, we have almost 150 cats in residence. While we hope that many will be adopted into loving homes, those cats who aren't adopted will live their lives in a safe, comfortable, cat-friendly environment.

We also own a retirement home for cats--Sylvester House. The residents of Sylvester House are cats whose people have passed away or can no longer take care of them.

We are now expanding our assistance to animals in Santa Barbara County by building a feral sanctuary. Although we believe that trap-neuter-release (TNR) is the most humane method of controlling the feral cat population, there are times when that option isn't viable. For instance, we sometimes rescue a feral mother cat nursing a litter. Since the mother cat stays with us until her litter is weaned, it's not safe to return her to her old territory. Rather, we would spay her and place her at our feral sanctuary. Although we have the land required for our sanctuary, we need additional funds for fencing, outbuildings, and other necessities. If you are interested in helping secure a place for feral cats to live in safety by providing funds or services, please donate now or e-mail us with additional information.

Our vision is to assist in creating a no-kill world by rescuing and finding lifelong homes for adoptable animals. Although we are located in Santa Barbara County, we will offer support and assistance to rescue organizations and animals without regard for geographic boundaries.
